Turning 65? Here’s What You Need to Know About Medicare

Turning 65 is an important milestone—and for many people, it also means it’s time to start thinking about Medicare.

Unfortunately, Medicare can feel confusing at first. Part A, Part B, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplements, and Part D all serve different purposes. The good news is that you don’t have to figure everything out at once.

When Can You Enroll in Medicare?

For most people, the Medicare Initial Enrollment Period begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and continues for three months afterward.

However, turning 65 does not always mean you have to enroll immediately. If you or your spouse are still working and you have qualifying employer health coverage, different rules may apply.

That’s why it’s important to understand your situation before making a decision.

What Are Your Medicare Options?

Once you’re eligible for Medicare, you’ll generally start with Original Medicare, which includes:

  • Medicare Part A – primarily helps cover inpatient hospital care.
  • Medicare Part B – helps cover physician services, outpatient care and other medical services.

From there, you may have additional choices.

You can consider a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan to help with some of the costs Original Medicare doesn’t pay, along with a Part D prescription drug plan.

Another option is a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) offered by a private insurance company. These plans provide your Part A and Part B benefits and often include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits.

There Isn’t One Medicare Plan That’s Best for Everyone

Your medications, doctors, hospitals, budget and travel habits can all affect which option may be appropriate for you.

That’s why comparing plans based on your individual situation is so important.
